Forza Horizon 3 Xbox One/PC Versions Compared in New Video; PC's 60 FPS Very Demanding

The PC and Xbox One versions of Forza Horizon 3 both launch today, and it looks like you'll be enjoying a gorgeous (and very good) game no matter which platform your play on. As expected, the PC version can look and run much better, but fully taking advantage of what it offers requires some very high-end hardware.

Digital Foundry has taken a preliminary look at the two versions of the game, offering a comparison in the video below. It highlights some of the key differences in terms of visual fidelity when locking the PC version at 30 FPS. It doesn't, however, show off the HDR support in the Xbox One version, which is something you'll need a HDR display and an Xbox One S to take advantage of (as well as the full game--the recent demo doesn't have HDR support).

It's hard to overlook just how incredibly good the game looks when running at 4K and 60 FPS on PC. Another video shows off what this looks like, though you'll need a 4K display to get the full experience.

Perhaps more interesting is the type of hardware you need to run the game at 60 FPS. Digital Foundry played at 4K/60 FPS using an overclocked Core i7 and a Titan X Pascal, which is an expensive setup, though most people likely weren't expecting to achieve those settings with anything less. What's odd is it found that achieving a steady 60 FPS at even 1080p was a challenge with lesser hardware.

"Typically, a game that runs flawlessly at 4K on the new Titan X should run perfectly with performance to spare on Nvidia's GTX 1060--but not Forza Horizon 3, which actually runs significantly more slowly," Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter wrote. "The GTX 970--quite possibly the most popular enthusiast-level GPU installed in the most PCs today--shows a huge performance deficit compared to the 1060, but its shortfalls are nowhere near as pronounced as the R9 390 compared to the new RX 480, with a gap often in excess of 20 FPS(!). Bearing in mind that the R9 390 outperforms the RX 480 in many titles, this differential is remarkable."

More curious is the fact that even a Titan X Pascal encountered issues running the game on Ultra at 1080p with 4x MSAA. MSAA appears to be the source of many of the problems, and you should disable it if you encounter performance issues. However, this doesn't solve everything.

Locking the game at 30 FPS, which is obviously not ideal, also makes it possible to run the game smoothly with MSAA enabled even on an i5/GTX 970 setup. Unfortunately, pop-in appears to be an issue across both versions of the game, regardless of hardware configuration.

It's possible some of these PC performance issues will be ironed out with patches and new drivers. For now they're something to be aware of for prospective players without super-high-end hardware, particularly with the PC demo still not available.

being the one person here who trusted them and went and purchased the game at full price of £80 i am more than annoyed about all the issues with this game especially turn 10 have said many times there pc games and love the platform yet between them and playground games they have ruined this game to the extent that even me there biggest fan boy got a refund for this broken game and i am seriously considering never getting it again even if it is fixed in the long run also staying away from other games such as gears and crackdown etc ....... this explains why they was showing gears at 4k 30fps at egx i could hit that on forza seems they all believe that people cannot see past 30 lol devs and publishers are getting lazier and this is one of the worst things i have seen and i own batman arkham knight fuck you MS fuck you in the face

Today we will launch the latest content update for Forza Horizon 3 on both Xbox One and Windows 10. We expect this update will go live around 10 a.m. Pacific. This latest update also includes numerous improvements for both the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of Forza Horizon 3. These improvements include:

Windows 10
- Fixed a performance issue on Windows 10 that caused stuttering with high or unlocked framerates on certain hardware configurations

- Improved stability on Windows 10

- Disable mouse move detection while driving

- The Windows 10 video options screen will no longer ask users to save when no changes have been made

- Additional options have been added to the Windows 10 Advanced Controller Menu. These include:
o Steering wheel sensitivity
o Invert Force Feedback
o Centre spring scale
o Damping scale
- Fixed a problem where pre-order cars and the Halo Warthog were not appearing in the Windows 10 version of the game for some players

Wheel Improvements
- Logitech G27 is now registered correctly on Windows 10, so the correct default mapping will be applied

- All wheels with enough buttons have had the horn added to their default mappings on Windows 10

- Fix to dead zones for acceleration and braking axes on wheels

- Default mappings for all TX Racing Wheel variants

- Fixed a bug where custom input mappings would not save successfully

General Improvements
- The Social and Rivals tabs will now unlock for players with Xbox Live Silver accounts

- Fixed a bug where the racing line would sometimes disappear

- Controller hot swapping is now available. Players can switch between controllers/their keyboard whenever they choose (including the wheel)

- Various content fixes for cars

In addition to the fixes above arriving with today’s update, the teams at Playground and Turn 10 are working on addressing further known issues in Forza Horizon 3 including force feedback and wheel support, general stability and performance, and more. Look for more details on these improvements in the future.

1.89 GB update file size so not hoping for much lol

FYI

At 10 AM PDT, we released our first update to Forza Horizon 3 on PC. There are three ways this update can be applied:

In the Windows Store app, find Forza Horizon 3 under Your Games and click the down arrow.

Launch the game once the update is available, and the update will begin downloading automatically after signing in.

The update will be downloaded and installed automatically in the background if your PC is configured for automatic updates.

For updates to download and install correctly, it is important to confirm Windows is up to date (OS Build 14393.222). Without this Windows Update, the full game will be downloaded again. If the update begins and you discover you are not on the correct version of Windows, feel free to cancel the update as it is downloading and update Windows. Once the update is completed, you can restart the update to the game using the Windows Store app, and clicking the down arrow next to Forza Horizon 3 in Your Games.

You will know that your game has completed the update when you see that you have installed 1.0.14.2. You will see this in the lower left corner of the screen when the game is launched, or listed in the Window Store app under Downloads and Updates.

If you run into a problem while downloading or applying the update, please reply back to this thread. When replying, please include the following information:

OS Build number (can be found by running winver).

Error code seen in the Windows Store app, listed next to Forza Horizon 3 in Downloads and Updates (click on your profile, select Downloads and Updates).

A short description of the issue.

It's been a busy week for Playground Games' drive 'em up Forza Horizon 3—first, it released its Alpinestars car pack, then it revealed details on its first expansion due later this year, and now it's launched a free demo on Windows 10.

The latter can be located via the Windows 10 Store and offers the following, as per this post from Microsoft community manager Brian Ekberg:

"Your tour Down Under begins in classic Horizon fashion – with beautiful scenery, great driving roads, and awesome vehicles. From the moment the action begins, you are unmistakably in Australia, with all of its awe-inspiring beauty and tremendous environmental diversity. You’ll blast along ocean-side roads, and race on the beach alongside the famed Twelve Apostles landmarks.

"You’ll grab ludicrous air off of Danger Sign jumps buried deep in the Australian rainforests, and have a chance to get sideways through Drift Zones in Byron Bay. Once you’ve finished all the events in the demo, you’ll be able to hop online and join your fellow Forza friends in an online free-roam session to explore the demo’s map together."

Again, the demo is free so I'd say it's worth a whirl on those grounds alone. If you need more convincing, though, Phil described the full game, which incidentally marks the Horizon series' debut on PC, thusly in his review: "The best Forza Horizon is now one of the best racing games on PC. Vast, varied and lots of fun."
